Availability
I try and work with clients with a flexible approach offering weekday sessions Monday - Friday, with some limited evening session availability.
I work from a peaceful, leafy garden consultation room from my home in Shalford near to Guildford and Godalming. But if you're unable to travel or would prefer to talk to me from the comfort of your own home I also meet clients online via Zoom.
About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Hannah and I'm glad that you're here because whatever your struggle might be you now don't have to face it alone.
Perhaps an unexpected turn of events has thrown your life into chaos and you feel in crisis – the breakdown of a relationship, illness, the loss of a job or the bewildering pain of grief. These all have the capacity to leave us feeling anxious of what’s to come and at odds with a world that’s changed. It’s often in these moments that therapy can help restore a semblance of control by bringing focus back to the relationship we have with ourself and exploring how we might choose to respond to life's challenges.
But counselling isn’t just about support in a crisis, it can also be a reflective space for those wanting to better understand themselves. Finding time to pause and be curious about our emotional response and behavioural patterns can enhance both personal and professional relationships and ultimately help us become better equipped to deal with the demands of modern life.
Who am I? I am an experienced counsellor and have run my own private practice for over a decade. Before training to become a therapist I worked as a broadcast journalist for the BBC and then as a press officer for the Alzheimer's Society. My professional life has been defined by helping people feel heard and understood.
As a counsellor I have a background in working with those who have been affected by cancer and terminal illness and have consequently developed a special interest in grief and bereavement. However, my work also covers a broad range of personal, relationship and work related issues. I have also run stress management workshops for corporate business institutions.
Practice description
Whether in-person or online, I am committed to providing a warm, confidential space where together we can talk things through. As a humanistic counsellor my approach is rooted in the 'here-and-now' of how we live. Past experiences and relationships are explored in terms of the impact they have on the person we are today.
To support this I integrate Person-Centred therapy with Gestalt and Existential philosophy as part of a therapeutic approach that strives to raise a deeper awareness and understanding of feelings, encourage greater personal responsibility and help you live well and feel more fulfilled.
My first session
I want you to find the 'right' counsellor for you - someone you feel comfortable with. So to begin with I offer a free 30 minute initial session to help you get a better feel for how we might work together. I understand that finding a counsellor in itself can be a bit of daunting prospect so it might be useful to meet with a few different therapists before making a final decision.
When we meet for the first time there won't be any forms to fill, instead I'll guide you through the process, talking you through the 'nuts and bolts' of a counselling session and the working agreement that underpins the therapeutic relationship. Then we'll gently start to get to know each other as I invite you to tell me about what prompted you to get in touch and from there we'll explore what you would like to get from the counselling experience. It's a collaborative and supportive way of working from the start.
