Availability
As I am currently based in Japan, I am basically available for sessions from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. JST (2:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. GMT) on Wednesdays and Thursdays, though I may also be available outside of these hours by prior arrangement.
I provide psychotherapy and psychological counselling in both English and Japanese.
About me and my therapy practice
I lived in London for 24 years before relocating my practice to Japan in 2014. During my time there, I completed a five-year master鈥檚 program combining theory and practice, and achieved full accreditation and registration with the UKCP in 2011. Since then, I have also become a registered member of the 糖心官网, a status I continue to hold today.
For the past 12 years, I have provided psychological support to individuals experiencing attachment-related difficulties, including clients diagnosed with BPD, as well as their family members at a counselling centre affiliated with a psychiatric clinic.
My clinical experience extends beyond attachment and personality-related issues to include depressed moods associated with life transitions and stresses, concerns related to neurodevelopmental conditions, gender-related issues, childhood trauma, and interpersonal difficulties in family, workplace, and educational settings.
Furthermore, my experience of living in the UK for a long period of time has ensured that, both as a psychotherapist and as an individual, intercultural issues have always been on my radar. This perspective continues to help me understand and support clients who are struggling with these issues within my current practice in Japan, a country that is becoming increasingly diverse as a member of the global community.
My current clinical work is primarily informed by CBT, reflecting the needs and characteristics of the clients I work with. My original training, however, was in existential psychotherapy, which continues to provide the foundation of my therapeutic approach. Through my clinical experience and ongoing professional development, I have broadened my knowledge and understanding of CBT, mindfulness-based approaches, DBT, narrative therapy, integrative psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and systemic family therapy. I draw on these approaches as appropriate to support the individual needs of each client.
Practice description
Through my clinical counselling practice, I work with adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds and various stages of life.
In recent years, I have increasingly worked with clients navigating end-of-life issues. In addition, as a member of the palliative care team at the university hospital, I have provided psychotherapeutic interventions to patients with cancer, drawing on the principles of psycho-oncology.
Your ongoing sessions will begin based on the intake sheet you returned and the information the therapist gathered during the initial session. (See below for the steps to complete the initial session procedure.)
While the therapist may sometimes ask for more detailed and deeper information, therapy sessions generally begin with you talking at your own pace to understand yourself. Therapy sessions are designed to help you understand yourself, face yourself, explore, grow, and create a life that feels easier and more fulfilling to live.
Through your free and natural talking, the therapist will engage with you by accepting, expanding, interpreting, and sometimes analyzing your words, providing support for you to understand yourself better.
Where appropriate, the therapist will explain the purpose and process clearly during a session to ensure you understand, and will introduce self-practices, skills, and techniques as and when required.
However, there is really no need to rush or feel like you have to reach your goal quickly. You can absolutely take the sessions and your counselling at your own pace. That is because 鈥渦nderstanding where you are right now鈥 is the most important thing and, in fact, it is the quickest way to bring about change and reach those goals.
My first session
Your first session with me will be different from our ongoing sessions. It will begin with an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to explore what brings you to therapy. For this reason, the first session is usually 90 minutes in length and the session fee is 拢65.00.
Once both parties have agreed to begin counselling, we will arrange a date and time that works for both of us for the first session. Then, once I receive your payment for the session, you will be asked to complete and return the intake form I sent you in advance.
The intake form asks about your current circumstances, the difficulties you are experiencing, and the issues you would like to explore and change incounselling. Using this information as a starting point, I will guide our conversation through an assessment process while following the general structure of an intake interview. However, please do not feel that you need to follow the structure exactly during our session; you are very welcome to talk about whatever feels most important to you at that moment and at your own pace.
