About me and my therapy practice
Before training to be a counselling therapist, I worked for many years in Theatre In Education and in the creative industries. As a result of this, I have learned to appreciate the power of stories to ignite our individual and collective transformation.
I like to work collaboratively with clients, to identify the predominant themes,'characters' and patterns that have shaped their lives. My approach often involves challenging the negative or self limiting beliefs that can feel so painful. The healing of past stories and the creation of new ones can bring clarity, confidence, meaning and purpose. As insights emerge from this process, I support individuals to see themselves as the 'protagonist' of their own lives, so that an expanded view of oneself can encourage new plans and actions.
I consider it a privilege to support those clients who entrust me with their stories. I believe that growth and healing occur best when we feel deeply seen, heard, valued and accepted.
Practice description
My core training is in Psychsynthesis counselling, an integrative model that acknowledges all aspects of what it means to be human: mind, body, feelings, spirit.
Essential to this approach is the view that through every challenge and crisis, something new is trying to emerge. Considering our difficulties as opportunities to re-evaluate our lives and find new direction can be empowering. Even in the midst of suffering, it is possible to make sense of our experiences, let go of destructive patterns and make wiser choices.
Along with straightforward dialogue, I sometimes introduce simple tools and techniques such as guided imagery, mindfulness meditation, writing exercises and drawing. I also make use of some CBT and Gestalt therapy techniques on occasion.
I offer both short and long-term counselling to adults of all ages and backgrounds and have experience with a range of concerns.
My first session
Our first session will last for an hour. I will ask some simple questions about what is troubling you most, your background, coping strategies and support systems.
The first session is also an opportunity for you to ask me about the way I work and for us to establish aims and goals together, based on your hopes for our therapeutic process.
