About me and my therapy practice
Yes*. Being human can be tricky.
We can all get stuck. Stuck in our heads and our feelings, in relationships, work, obsessions and compulsions, stuck in unhelpful behaviours and unhelpful ways of seeing things.
Yes*. We can all get unstuck.
I believe that everything you need to stay unstuck, is in you. It always has been. It's just a matter of understanding how the situations we face in life can leave us feeling, then exploring different responses to those feelings that can bring about better outcomes for ourselves and those around us.
Practice description
My 25 years of practice experience, began through accessing a lot of different therapeutic support myself. My approach is the result of everything I've learned over this time as a client, therapist, supervisor and a tutor. These grounding principles continue to form my day to day approach to life.
I would be seen as an integrative therapeutic counsellor; integrating multiple proven therapeutic models and approaches.
So, we have many ways to make better sense of life situations: Internal Family Systems, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, 12-Step, The Work, The I Ching, Neuroplasticity, Mindfulness, Meditation, Dreamwork, The Tangle; Integrative Counselling.
We can connect on-video and on-phone and out-side in County Down.
Together, we develop a tailored approach to therapy and counselling; collaboratively, flexibly and with our focus on solutions that can bring about better outcomes for ourselves and those around us.
And I’ve found that our wellbeing can thrive beyond therapy and counselling, with ongoing supportive structures to guide and inspire us. So, included in the therapy, I’ve curated and simplified the proven life approaches we explore together and centred them on-line, so you can refer to and return to them at any time. It’s called ‘The Bulb Booth’.

My first session
Stepping into counselling for the first time [or returning to therapeutic engagement], can hold unknowns. Here are some experiences of people I connect with:
Opening new perspectives ___
Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t being given the answers. It’s meeting someone who helps you find your own. I almost gave up on therapy because I couldn’t find a space where I truly felt understood. Then I found The Bulb Booth and met Joe.
Sessions feel like a conversation ___
Joe is without a doubt the best therapist I have ever known. Right from the start, I found him really easy to talk to and he has helped me so much. Our sessions feel like a conversation rather than me just having to talk all the time.
Rich understanding ___
Working with Joe is extremely rewarding and supportive. His wide knowledge base and readiness to meet me where I am, means that each session is relevant, current and builds on the work we have done.
To gain clarity ___
Joe has helped me to gain clarity on several long-standing personal issues, especially one when he asked a single thoughtful question that enabled me to release the deep guilt and shame that I had been holding on to for nearly 50 years. It was amazing to feel it physically draining from my body.
Positivity and new perspectives ___
Joe will undoubtedly bring positivity and new perspectives to your life. It’s like having a friend you didn’t know in your corner, and within the first couple of sessions, he does everything right to make you comfortable and feel like you’ve known each other for years.
Somewhere I hadn't seen ___
Joe has a sharp mind, keen understanding, and the ability to notice or judge things very clearly. He gives me space, lets me find my own way, but comes in at the right moment with a suggestion or a breadcrumb that leads me somewhere I hadn't seen myself. A bit like a good manager; quietly doing more than is seen from the outside.
What I can help with
Addictions, Anxiety, Bereavement, Depression, Identity issues, Obsessions, Personal development, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Spirituality, Stress, Substance Dependency, Work related issues
Types of therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Behavioural, Brief therapy, CBT, Cognitive, Creative therapy, Eclectic, Existential, Gestalt, Humanistic, Integrative, Internal Family Systems, Person centred, Psychodynamic, Relational

About me and my therapy practice
Centred around Client wellbeing, I love supervision that can be the collaborative and creative work between Counsellor and Supervisor, exploring and expanding the therapeutic craft.
Together, our aim is to support key elements of your professional experience: Therapeutic Craft, Practice Administration and Personal Growth.
And together, our process involves exploring What arises from sessions with our clients, Why we approach those things in the ways we do, and How we can make those approaches most effectively.
