About me and my therapy practice
I believe that meaningful change begins when you feel genuinely heard, understood and accepted without judgement. My aim is to provide a warm, confidential and supportive space where you feel safe to explore whatever has brought you to counselling.
As an Integrative Counsellor, I tailor therapy to your individual needs rather than following a one size fits all approach. I draw on a range of therapeutic models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and relationships.
A particular area of interest for me is understanding how family dynamics, family roles, attachment and childhood experiences continue to influence us in adulthood. Together, we can explore how these experiences may have shaped the way you see yourself, relate to others and respond to life's challenges. Understanding these patterns often provides valuable insight and creates opportunities for lasting positive change.
Whilst coping strategies can be incredibly helpful, I believe therapy is about much more than simply managing symptoms. My aim is to help you understand yourself more fully, recognise patterns that may be holding you back, build healthier relationships and learn how to look after yourself emotionally.
I work at a pace that feels comfortable for you, recognising that every person's journey is unique. Whether you are facing a specific difficulty or simply feel that something isn't quite right, I will work alongside you with empathy, honesty and respect to help you move towards a more fulfilling and authentic life.
Practice description
I am a ÌÇÐĹÙÍø Accredited Counsellor with over 21 years' experience, offering face to face counselling for adults from my practice in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. I hold a BA (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy and am recognised by BUPA and Aviva. I am fully insured, DBS checked, undertake regular professional supervision and complete ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) each year.
Over the course of my career, I have worked within Social Services and the NHS for more than 10 years and have also completed specialist training as an adoption counsellor with Barnardo's. This breadth of experience enables me to support clients with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.
I work with issues including anger management, anxiety, depression, OCD, autism, trauma, childhood trauma, attachment issues, bereavement and loss, relationship difficulties, separation and divorce, family conflict, family dynamics, family estrangement, low self-esteem, work-related stress and the lasting impact of childhood family experiences.
Quite a few years ago, a life-changing event caused me to re-evaluate my own future. With the help of an amazing counsellor, I began to move forward, understand what had shaped me and learn how to look after myself emotionally. That experience inspired me to become a counsellor and continues to influence the way I work today by offering clients hope that meaningful change is possible.
My first session
Many people feel nervous before their first counselling session and that's completely understandable. My aim is to help you feel as comfortable as possible from the moment you arrive.
When you book your first appointment, I will send you a confidential questionnaire to complete before we meet. This gives you the opportunity to tell me a little about yourself, what has brought you to counselling and what you hope to achieve from therapy. Having this information beforehand means we can spend less time completing paperwork and more time focusing on you.
Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and for you to decide whether I am the right counsellor for you. There is no pressure to share everything straight away and we will work at a pace that feels comfortable.
We'll talk through your questionnaire together, explore any areas you would like to discuss in more detail and begin to understand what may be contributing to your current difficulties. We'll also agree your goals for counselling and discuss how we can work together to help you achieve them.
I also understand what it feels like to be the person sitting in the client's chair. Personal therapy formed an important part of my professional training and I have experienced first-hand what it is like to seek support and talk about difficult experiences. I know how daunting that first appointment can feel, but I also know how valuable it is to feel genuinely heard, understood and accepted.
There is always time for you to ask questions about counselling or my approach. It is important to me that you leave your first session feeling listened to, understood and with a sense of hope about the journey ahead.
