About me and my therapy practice

Welcome. You're not alone. And you can change.

Being traumatised can feel like being trapped in a wooden rowboat on the choppiest, wildest ocean imaginable – in danger, out of control, with no help, support, anchor or safety in sight.

You can change from traumatised to un-traumatised. From anxious and depressed to calm and balanced. From emotionally overwhelmed to having great emotional awareness, management and resilience. From feeling physically vulnerable and unsafe to confident and strong in your body. You can become your own anchor, able to ground and support yourself when life is, inevitably, challenging.

Everyone's therapy needs are different, and it's important that your needs are met in your therapy.

I believe that, if you want to change, you can. My name is Karen Croft and I'm here to support you.

I specialise in working with adults aged 18+ who have experienced traumatic childhoods, including physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse, later life traumatic events and experiences and childhood neglect, which can be as devastating as trauma.

You might have been diagnosed with C-PTSD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, OCD or other mental health issues. The underlying cause for these mental health issues is often childhood trauma; once your trauma has been worked through, symptoms typically cease or significantly, sustainably reduce.

To support my training, I spent 18 months volunteering for one morning a week on an acute psychiatric ward at Farnham Road Hospital, Guildford, Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. This placement provided me with invaluable frontline experience and a greater understanding of working with people with a wide range of severe and enduring mental health issues.

Practice description

I offer you a safe, contained, compassionate space to explore, and gain a new understanding of, the aspects of your life that have brought you to therapy today, and to change.

Your therapy needs are unique – we’ll work together to agree a therapy approach that feels right for you and enables you to achieve your therapy goals. I use a blended approach, including EMDR and the EMDR Flash Technique, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Gestalt, and solution and compassion focussed therapy.

I also use creative therapy experiments, such as Gestalt chair work and ‘favourite object’, to help people gain improved self awareness in a new and different way.

We'll go through short, standard questionnaires used in medical settings – the GAD-7 for symptoms of anxiety and the PHQ-9 for symptoms of depression – during your first session and every six sessions thereafter, to understand the impact of your therapy on your mental and emotional health and we'll talk about any changes that we might make together to better support you and help you achieve your therapy goals.

My first session

I offer you a free, 20 minute initial Zoom consultation, where you can talk about your therapy needs and we can think about how we might work together to best support you in achieving your therapy goals.

If you think that we can work together, we'll progress to an initial assessment â€“ your first session â€“ where we'll go through standard questionnaires for your symptoms of anxiety and depression, a risk assessment and a standard questionnaire that includes your reasons for seeking therapy, now;  your therapy expectations and goals;  your previous experience of therapy;  your general health;  and other information about you that feels important to you.
