About me and my therapy practice

I'm an award-winning executive psychotherapist with over 5,000 hours of clinical practice. I work with driven, capable professionals who are managing complexity externally but struggling with something more hidden. I draw from not only my clinical training but also my background as a former GB athlete and my active role as a Relational Strategist and Senior Advisor to FTSE-listed organisations.

My clients are often senior professionals across law, medicine, tech, pharma and academia, and are typically people others rely on — leaders, decision-makers, and high performers. They don't come to therapy lightly. When they do, it is usually because self-reliance is no longer enough to resolve what they are facing.

Most arrive cautious, often sceptical. They've kept themselves going for years by outworking or outsmarting their difficulty, and what brings them here is usually the quiet recognition that the coping mechanisms which built the career are now costing them the life they toiled so hard to achieve. Sometimes, the intellect has outpaced the human who is now playing catch up.

My work is to help you see clearly what the issues are, understand the patterns, how they formed, and what purpose they served then and now. The work is not simply about insight, but about metabolising insight into change — into how you relate to yourself, how you think under pressure, and how you engage with the people around you. This is often challenging, but it is also where meaningful movement happens.

Practice description

Here’s what I bring to working together:

  • Over 5,000 hours of clinical practice across the NHS, charities, and private settings.
  • Specialism in trauma and grief. I helped develop one of the few fathers-only therapy approaches in the UK for men who've lost children. My Masters dissertation on paternal grief was awarded with Distinction at the University of Salford.
  • Executive-level experience. I advise senior leaders at FTSE-listed organisations on relational strategy, so I understand the pressures, politics, and identity demands of senior roles and high-stakes careers.
  • An elite sport background. Former Team GB international and medal-winning athlete. I navigated a psychological rebuild after a career-ending car accident, including recovery from PTSD and panic.
  • Award-winning clinician. Big Life Creative award, selected from 600 NHS staff across the northwest.
  • Academically active. Ongoing research into men's grief and emotional resilience keeps the work sharp and evidence-led.
  • Six years of professional training in person-centred counselling, psychotherapy, and mindfulness.

My first session

What clients most often say is that I balance relatability with clinical skill — real enough to be trusted, skilled enough to get somewhere useful quickly. Expect a first session to be direct, considered, and grounded. Many leave with more clarity after one meeting than they expected from several.

"James has been an invaluable asset to me as a barrister navigating emotionally charged cases. His insight and guidance have helped me untangle my thoughts, making the challenges of life and work more manageable." — Partner at a Top 100 Law Firm.

"During a period of significant organisational change following a private equity acquisition, I was operating under sustained pressure with very little space to think clearly. Working with James provided a rare environment where I could step out of performance mode and properly reflect." — Executive Director, Global Pharmaceutical Company.

"I have worked with James for almost a year, and he has been a key part of my progress in overcoming past trauma. I have seen a huge improvement in my overall wellbeing." — Chartered Accountant, of the ‘Big Four’.
