About me and my therapy practice
I bring 30 years’ experience and study in psychology. Finding a therapist can feel like a minefield. Ultimately you probably want to find someone to talk to that you feel comfortable with, and who can help you. I understand how confusing and nerve-wracking it can be to consider therapy and take the first step. I have an academic background in psychology, worked in business psychology, and now work in private practice.
I provide clients with a supportive space to unpack things. I will help you make sense of what is happening for you. Whether you are struggling with big life events, or just feel lost or low, I'm here to help. You don’t need to know why you are coming to therapy. Working holistically, we will link back to your childhood, focus on what is in the here and now and also think about the future. You may need to assess what you value and what you want to move towards in your life. Creativity can help, and I find working with imagery, stories, dreams and metaphors can bring great depth and understanding, helping us see what might be unconscious. The nervous system is important, and I work with the body as well as feelings and thoughts.
I also think about how you connect to the world beyond yourself, be it people, communities, institutions, spiritual or religious beliefs. Your challenges will be seen as signs of what you need more of or less of in life rather than a pathology. I typically work long-term and use a depth psychology approach that seeks to get to the root of who we are and what gives us meaning.
It is an exploratory process, and I will give you input not just listen. This is less about ‘homework’ exercises, but offering a viewpoint, bringing perspective and challenge as well as creative ways to work with what you bring. If you would like to know more, please check my website where I have also written a few articles.
Practice description
I work in person and online (typically via zoom). I am trained in integrative transpersonal therapy and have a strong Jungian lens.
The clients I have experience of working with include people suffering anxiety or depression, who have experienced significant loss and bereavement in their life. I work with childhood trauma and traumatic midlife events. Some areas of particular interest are neurodivergence, mother-daughter relationships, loss of meaning or direction, disconnect with feelings.
I have a Postgraduate Diploma in psychosynthesis counselling from The Psychosynthesis Trust. This is a transpersonal modality. I am a registered member of the ÌÇÐĹÙÍø.
I also have both BSc and MSc qualifications in psychology. I have worked as a psychologist with corporate and public sector organisations over the last 20 years.
My first session
If you are interested in therapy with me, then I would be happy to have a 15 minute phone or video call to enable you to find out more.
Our first full (50 minute) therapy session will enable both of us to assess the suitability of our working together. I will ask about your background and interest in therapy, and give you change to ask questions about me and how I work. It is important for me to gather a full history from you to enable me to understand where you are coming from.
It may take us a few sessions to assess whether we are right to work together. Once we are both agreed that we will do so, I work in an open-ended way, which means I don’t put time limits on our work but instead continue until one or both of us feel that the work is coming to a natural end, ie you have got what you need from therapy. After 6 sessions I will prompt a discussion to review how it is going. In a similar way, at any time we can discuss how it is going, any timeframes you might be considering, and any new goals or aspirations you have for therapy.
