About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Mal Jones.  My ultimate goal is to help my clients to understand and process what they need to in a  gentle, warm and compassionate way, at the deepest level possible whilst learning to love themselves for who they truly are.  All of this, without having to re-visit what may have happened again and again.

I believe that everyone is capable of growth and healing no matter what they've been through in life or how long ago things may have happened to them.

My specialist areas of practice are trauma and complex trauma, resulting from sexual violence, early childhood abuse and domestic abuse.  I have specialised in these areas for the last 10 years. However, this experience also lends itself to helping with more general anxiety, panic attacks or depression, self confidence, relationship issues or addiction.  I have also helped people who experience chronic pain, fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue.

I have worked in charity settings for a number of years and now provide supervision to practitioners from those organisations.   I am also a qualified ISVA (independent sexual violence adviser) and have experience of helping people who have recently reported crimes against them.  I have some formal training in autism and pride myself on adapting the way i work to suit neurotypical and neurodivergent people alike.

Practice description

As we are all unique, there is no one type of therapy which is guarenteed to be helpful for everyone.  This is why i offer an integrative approach and encourage each person to choose what they feel works best for them, whilst building a relationship based on empathy, non judgement and trust.

Often we come to therapy led by a part of us which has been trying to "keep on keeping on" and is now exhausted from doing so but doesn't know where to start or what to do differently. I don't direct what we talk about or explore and i don't tell you how to think or feel. I often just offer options or invite a slowing down and an intervention which might help.

I work with adults and older teenagers.

You can read much more on my website about the types of therapy i offer; Internal Family Systems, Brainspotting and Deep Brain Reorienting.  These are all approaches which lend themselves well to a slow and gentle pace of therapy but offer powerful avenues to change which i have found to be deeper than talking alone.

My first session

I offer a free 20-30 minute initial consultation which can be helpful in getting a sense of whether we're right to work with one another. It's also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions about working with me and air any worries or apprehensions about therapy in general.

Our first session can be virtual or in person and is an opportunity to get a good sense of the here and now; the positive and the difficult.   I don't tend to take a "trauma history" and won't ask you to go into any detail about what you've been through.  This takes trust in me and trust in yourself that it's ok to turn towards it and it will happen when it's ready. Often we decide on a starting point and get a sense of what you would like to be different in your life or in your being.

About me and my therapy practice

I have around 10 years experience of working with trauma and complex trauma and 3 years experience as a Supervisor.  My specialism has been in working with those affected by Sexual Violence and Domestic Abuse and naturally this has aided me in gaining experience in working with addiction, grief and loss, suicidal intent and self harm and other complex mental health issues.  I am also a qualified ISVA and provide supervision in this area of work.  I currently provide clinical supervision for two charities and many independent practitioners from different backgrounds; both qualified and in training.

I pride myself on providing a warm and non judgmental space and relationship, enriched with humour, where my supervisees can feel heard, understood, prized and where necessary guided.

Practice description

My primary approach to Supervision, as in therapy, is Person Centered.  I use the "seven eyed model" of supervision and also utilise Internal Family Systems, finding it helpful in bringing insight to the therapist/client dynamics as well as processing countertransferance, which can very much aid the depth of work between supervisee and their client. Where desired by the supervisee, i also love to work creatively using sketches, painting or chair work to explore relational dynamics and client material.  Together with a foundation of person centred training, i am also trained in Internal Family Systems (L 1), Brainspotting (L 1&2) and Deep Brain Reorienting (L1&2) though do not offer consultation in these specific modalities.

My first session

I offer a free 30 min video call to discuss working together, then typically complete an intake form which explores placement (if you're a student) organisation detail, professional membership/insurance and contact details. We then contract to meet monthly or fortnightly.
