About me and my therapy practice

Whether you are facing a specific crisis in your life or looking for a safe and courageous place to explore a sense of emotional stuckness, I offer an online counselling relationship that can help you find a way forward when friends, family, self-help or AI conversations have reached their limits.

I believe that meaningful change comes through gently turning towards the painful emotions that the mind and body work hard to keep at a safe distance. Within a consistent, empathic and committed therapeutic relationship, many people discover a capacity for change that can be difficult to access on their own, even with thoughtful self-reflection and dedicated self-help.

My core training is in integrative counselling and psychotherapy, rooted in a person-centred belief in your capacity—and ultimately your authority—to find your own way forward. Alongside this, I work from a trauma-informed perspective, considering how past relationships and experiences may continue to shape the present. While the way we work together will always be guided by your needs and preferences, my practice places particular emphasis on emotional exploration. I am currently specialising in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), which means working collaboratively with the emotions that lie beneath familiar patterns of distress and the ways we have learned to protect ourselves from them.

Both EFT and my integrative training are deeply collaborative. You can expect our sessions to be supportive, encouraging and thoughtfully paced. I welcome you to bring insights you've gained through reading, self-reflection, AI conversations or holistic approaches, and together we can explore how these fit with your own lived experience.

I approach my work with openness and humility, allowing myself to be shaped by what I learn from my clients. My aim is to offer an affirming therapeutic relationship where you feel respected, understood and accepted, even where our life experiences or perspectives may differ.

Practice description

Many of my clients are women in early adulthood or mid-life who find me through word-of-mouth recommendations. However, I welcome enquiries from people of all backgrounds and life stages who may be facing a personal crisis or looking for support during a difficult time.

I work with individual adults and young adults aged 16+. I do not currently offer couples counselling.

Sessions are usually weekly but may reduce as the work progresses and take place online using a video call link that I will send to you. I also offer telephone sessions.

My first session

My hope is that our first contact leaves you feeling reassured that reaching out was the right step.

Before booking a full session, I usually offer a 30-minute exploratory call (£20). This gives you a chance to get a sense of me, ask any questions, and see whether the way I work feels like a good fit for you. There is no obligation to continue afterwards.

If you decide to go ahead, I will send you my counselling agreement to read in advance. In our first session we can talk through it together, clarify anything that feels unclear, and adapt it where needed so that it supports the way we work together. Over time, clients have helped shape this agreement and I value the collaborative process it creates.

The rest of the first session is simply a space for us to begin. Some people arrive needing to talk freely and unburden themselves; others find it harder to know where to start. Both are completely welcome.

You can expect me to listen carefully, check my understanding, and gently explore your thoughts, feelings, and bodily responses where this feels helpful. Sessions usually last 50 minutes, which can sometimes feel as though the time passes quickly. As our work develops, we will aim to slow things down so that you feel increasingly comfortable and in control of the process.

If at any point you feel that I may not be the right therapist for you, we can talk about this openly.

About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Andie (she/they),

I'm training in the Seven-Eyed Model of supervision, which has quickly become a way of thinking that feels both intuitive and immensely useful to me. I love the way it helps us step back from the immediate details of client work and become curious about everything that's happening in and around the therapeutic relationship.

My hope is that supervision becomes somewhere you feel able to think freely, feel appropriately supported, and gradually develop greater confidence in your own therapeutic voice. While I'm in the early stages of my supervisory practice, I also bring established experience as a therapist and lecturer, and I take the responsibility of offering supervision seriously.

One of the things I'm particularly interested in is integration. I trained at the University of East London and have a lived understanding of the Core Integrative Process Model and the joys, frustrations and occasional confusion that can come with trying to develop your own way of working within a common factors, open-systems, transtheoretical model.

I don't think integration is something you're expected to have "worked out" by the time you qualify. If anything, I think it really begins after qualification and continues to develop through practice, supervision, reflection and time. That's very much the spirit I hope to bring to supervision.

If you're an integrative trainee, newly qualified, or simply someone wanting to reconnect with the foundations of your practice alongside developing your own integration, I'd be delighted to hear from you and to explore whether we might be a good fit.

Practice description

After a placement at Norfolk and Waveney Mind offering time-limited counselling, I set up a private practice providing open-ended integrative therapy to adults, both in person and online, and I've not looked back. I also lecture in Counselling and Psychotherapy, so I enjoy the variety and understand the reality of portfolio careers, alongside all the ordinary transitions and demands while we're trying to become the therapists we hope to be. You can see more of my approach to counselling in my Counselling Directory Listing here: /therapists/389051/andrea-mcpherson/norwich-nr14?search=Andrea%20McPherson

Questions of identity, power and difference are central to how I think about both therapy and supervision. As a white, able-bodied, middle-class woman with working-class roots, I'm aware that my own perspective is inevitably shaped by privilege as well as experiences of feeling outside of dominant cultures. Like many counsellors, I'm continually trying to understand what it means to work ethically with power rather than imagining I've somehow "arrived".

I'm also interested in the role AI is beginning to play in our profession. I've undertaken CPD in this area and try to keep up with the conversations and developments that are shaping the water we all swim in. Whether AI feels exciting, unsettling or somewhere in between, I'm very happy for it to become part of our supervisory conversations if it's relevant to your work.

Like my therapeutic practice, I hope my supervision continues to evolve over the years. I don't imagine being everyone's supervisor forever. As your practice develops, your supervisory needs will naturally change too, and if there comes a point where another supervisor feels better placed to support the next stage of your journey, I'd see that as a healthy part of professional development rather than a failure of our work together.

My first session

Our first session is a chance for mutual assessment of whether we are a good fit for supervision. If online, we will use my doxy.me room, and if in-person, you will be welcome at my home, where I also see private clients.

If a full hour (£45) or 90-minute (£60) session feels like too much of a commitment to you, I do offer a 30-minute taster session at £25.00.

The first session gives you a chance to share your hopes for the supervisory relationship and a chance for me to assess if I feel like I offer you support given your counselling practice and interests. I will want to get a sense of your learning style and stage of career, and we can discuss my understanding of how the 7-eyed model of supervision can support you with your client work and wider development as a counsellor.

You can go away with no obligation to take up supervision with me and encouragement to find the right supervisor for you at this time.
