About me and my therapy practice
As a person-centred/integrative counsellor I place my client at the heart of the therapeutic process, creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental environment in which we can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I work collaboratively with the you, recognising that each individual is unique and has the capacity for growth, self-awareness, and positive change.
Drawing on the principles of the person-centred approach, I am passionate when exercising empathy, genuineness, and unconditional positive regard, helping to build a trusting therapeutic relationship between us. This relationship provides the foundation for us to explore your concerns openly and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
Using integrative add ons, I may incorporate techniques and theories from a range of therapeutic approaches, tailoring our work to meet your specific needs, goals, and circumstances. These approaches may include elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic theory, transactional analysis, mindfulness, or other evidence-based modalities where appropriate.
I work ethically and professionally, respecting confidentiality, diversity, and your autonomy. Rather than directing or advising, I support clients in identifying their own strengths, resources, and solutions, empowering you to make informed choices and achieve meaningful change in your life.
Practice description
My therapeutic approach is primarily person-centred and trauma-informed, underpinned by the belief that each individual has the capacity for growth, self-awareness and positive change when provided with the right therapeutic conditions. I strive to create a safe, empathic and non-judgemental environment where clients feel heard, valued and understood. Through the core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard, I support clients in exploring their experiences at a pace that feels manageable and respectful of their individual needs.
My work is informed by an understanding of the impact of trauma and adverse life experiences on emotional wellbeing, relationships and behaviour. I recognise that many coping strategies, including addictive behaviours, may have developed as ways of managing overwhelming emotions, distress or unmet needs. I aim to work sensitively with clients to understand the function of these behaviours while supporting them to develop healthier ways of coping.
Although my approach is rooted in acceptance and compassion, I also believe that therapeutic growth often requires challenge. Within a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship, I gently challenge clients when I notice patterns of avoidance, self-defeating beliefs, incongruence or behaviours that may be maintaining their difficulties. In addiction work particularly, I recognise the importance of helping clients explore denial, ambivalence and the impact of their choices, while maintaining respect for their autonomy and readiness for change.
My challenge is always offered with care, curiosity and transparency rather than confrontation. I use reflection, immediacy and thoughtful questioning to encourage deeper self-awareness and insight. By balancing support with challenge, I aim to empower clients to recognise their strengths, take ownership of their decisions and move towards meaningful and sustainable change.
My first session
During the first session, I aim to create a safe, welcoming, and non-judgemental space where you can begin to share your experiences at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
We will start by discussing practical aspects of counselling, including the counselling contract, session times, confidentiality, professional boundaries, and any questions you may have about the therapeutic process. This helps establish a clear and secure framework for our work together.
I will invite you to provide some background information about yourself, which may include your family relationships, personal history, and any current or past experiences with drug or alcohol use that you feel are relevant to your wellbeing. This information helps me gain a broader understanding of your circumstances and the factors that may be affecting you.
We will also explore what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to achieve from our sessions. I will ask about what you feel would be helpful and unhelpful in therapy, enabling us to work collaboratively in a way that best meets your needs. Together, we will begin to identify your goals and focus areas, ensuring that the counselling process is tailored to support you effectively.
The first session is also an opportunity for us to start building a therapeutic relationship based on trust, respect, and open communication.
