Therapist - Kingston-Upon-Thames

Kingston-Upon-Thames KT1
Sessions from £75.00

Features

About me and my therapy practice

Lots of people come to me who are either exhausted trying to carry everything and scared of what will happen if they can't do it any more. Or shutdown unable to participate in life the way they wish they could, or feel like they should. Often these two people find each other and come to me as a couple. In fact this pattern happens so often it has a name: anxious and avoidant attachment.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone and I would genuinely love to help.

How I can help

I'm Kate McKenna, a counsellor offering in-person counselling in Godalming, Surrey and online counselling across the UK. I work with individuals and couples navigating anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence and the complicated feelings that come with being human, particularly in relationships.

You might be someone who:

  • Keeps the peace at the cost of your own needs
  • Feels more comfortable numb than overwhelmed
  • Wonders whether wanting safe, respectful and authentic connection is expecting too much
  • Is trying to parent differently to how you were parented and finding it hard to find the balance between breaking away from the old and paving the way for something new

I often hear people say "it's just who I am" like these struggles are a character flaw or something permanent they're stuck with. What I usually find is that they are things we learned early in life, that got repeated and reinforced over the years until they became automatic.

But, they aren't character flaws or proof you're not enough. They're patterns, and patterns can change.

I specialise in

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Trauma and early life wounds
  • Neurodivergence (ADHD and autism) for individuals and couples
  • Relationship difficulties, communication and conflict
  • Couples counselling in Godalming and online
  • Low self-esteem and social anxiety
  • Parenting stress and breaking intergenerational patterns

Practice description

Counselling for:

  • Adults 18+
  • Older adults 65+
  • Couples/Relationships

Location:

  • Online counselling UK wide via Zoom
  • In-person counselling - Godalming, Surrey.

Frequency:

A space is held just for you at the same time each week for as long as you need.

My first session

In our first session we'll be getting to know each other a bit better. There's no pressure to talk about everything all at once, we'll start wherever feels right for you. You don't need to arrive with a plan of what you want to say, it's just a chance to get a feel for each other and for me to get a sense of what pace feels right for you to work at.

We'll spend some time covering the logistics, things like what to do if we have technical problems, if you're running late, or how best to contact me if you need to reschedule.

If you have questions about how counselling works or what to expect as we go forward, we can talk about that too.

Sometimes people have been holding things in so long and so hard, that it feels like it wants to come gushing out all at once. If that's you, don't worry, I'll manage the time so we can bring things back in gently and make sure you're set up well for the end of the session.

If you arrive and suddenly don't know what to talk about, that's ok too. It happens to a lot of people in a new setting. I'll help you to feel comfortable and I can ask some questions to get us started if that feels easier.

As we come to the end of the session I'll check in with how you're feeling and whether there's anything you need before we finish. We'll book in your next session and say goodbye until next time.
