About me and my therapy practice
I offer a calm, kind and supportive space where you can talk openly and feel heard without judgement. My approach is integrative, which means I draw on different counselling theories and ways of working depending on your needs, experiences and goals. I do not believe therapy should be a 鈥渙ne size fits all鈥 process, so we will work together at a pace that feels right for you.
I often support people who are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, low in confidence, stuck in people-pleasing patterns, affected by difficult relationships or family experiences, or disconnected from themselves. Therapy can help you make sense of what has happened, understand patterns that may be repeating, and begin to respond to yourself and others in more compassionate and helpful ways.
Our work may involve exploring past experiences, understanding how they affect you in the present, noticing emotions and responses in the body, developing grounding tools, and building a stronger sense of self-understanding and self-kindness. I will always aim to explain the way we are working and check that it feels safe, helpful and appropriate for you.
I can support people in processing distressing or traumatic experiences that still feel overwhelming or 鈥渟tuck鈥 using Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. Before any EMDR processing takes place, we would spend time building stability, safety and coping strategies, and you would remain in control of the process throughout.
Above all, I aim to offer a warm, respectful and collaborative therapeutic relationship where you can feel supported to explore what is happening for you and move towards feeling more grounded, confident and connected to yourself.
Practice description
When you come to my practice, you can expect a calm, welcoming and supportive space where you will be listened to with care and without judgement. I understand that starting counselling can feel daunting, so I aim to make the first steps feel as gentle and straightforward as possible.
I offer an initial free telephone call of up to 30 minutes. This gives you the opportunity to tell me a little about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions, and get a sense of whether I feel like the right counsellor for you. There is no pressure to decide straight away.
If we choose to work together, sessions are usually once a week or every two weeks and last for one hour. We will begin by exploring what feels most important for you, what you would like from therapy, and how we can work together in a way that feels safe, respectful and useful. You do not need to have everything figured out before you come; many people start counselling simply knowing that something feels difficult, heavy or stuck.
My practice is based on collaboration. I will not tell you what to do or push you to talk about anything before you feel ready. Instead, we will work at your pace, making space for your thoughts, feelings, experiences and patterns to be understood. I may gently reflect what I notice, ask questions, offer grounding tools, or help you make links between past experiences and present difficulties.
Where appropriate, I may integrate EMDR therapy, but only after we have discussed this together and made sure it feels suitable and safe. Before any deeper trauma processing, we would spend time building stability, grounding and coping strategies so you feel supported throughout.
I offer face-to-face counselling from my ground-floor counselling room in Bridlington, which has wheelchair access, as well as online sessions via Zoom. My aim is for therapy to feel respectful, steady and supportive, giving you a space to feel heard, understood and more connected to yourself.
My first session
Your first session is a chance for us to begin getting to know each other and to explore what has brought you to counselling. I understand that starting therapy can feel daunting, so I will aim to make the session feel calm, gentle and as comfortable as possible.
We will usually begin by talking through what you are hoping for from counselling, what feels difficult at the moment, and anything you feel ready to share about your current situation or past experiences. You do not need to have everything worked out or know exactly where to start. It is completely okay to arrive feeling unsure, emotional, nervous or not knowing what to say.
I will also explain how I work, including confidentiality, session boundaries, fees, cancellations and what you can expect from the counselling process. There will be space for you to ask questions and to let me know if there is anything that would help you feel more at ease.
The first session is not about rushing into everything straight away. It is about beginning gently, helping you feel safe enough to talk, and deciding together whether working with me feels right for you. We may start to think about what you would like support with and what pace feels manageable.
If EMDR may be helpful, we can talk about this, but we would not rush into trauma processing. Before any deeper work, we would spend time building stability, grounding and coping strategies so that you feel supported and in control.
By the end of the first session, we can discuss whether you would like to continue, how often sessions may take place, and what our next steps might be. My aim is for you to leave with a clearer sense of what counselling with me may feel like and whether it feels like a good fit for you.
