About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm John McGeechan, a Person-Centred counsellor based in Torbay, South Devon (working from Galmpton and Brixham). Whatever's brought you here today – and whether or not you've ever spoken to a counsellor before – I want this to feel like an easy, low-pressure first step, not a daunting one.

My practice is built on Person-Centred Therapy: the belief that you already carry the capacity for your own growth and understanding, given a genuinely safe, non-judgemental space to explore it. I'm not here to diagnose you, tell you what's wrong, or direct the conversation – my role is simply to listen, without judgement, and to walk alongside you at whatever pace feels right for you.

I've worked with a wide range of people – adults of all ages, students, teachers, and ex-offenders among them – around grief, anxiety, health concerns, relationship difficulties, and the ordinary, difficult business of navigating change. I'm a Registered Member of the ÌÇÐĹÙÍø, an Accredited Registrant of the MNCS, hold a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling, and completed my Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy Research with Distinction – but honestly, a list of qualifications only tells you so much. You'll get a much better sense of whether we're a good fit from an actual conversation than from reading about me here, so please don't feel you need to have it all figured out before you reach out.

Practice description

I offer person-centred counselling for adults, working both in person (Galmpton and Brixham, South Devon) and online via Zoom – whichever feels more comfortable for you.

Every new client starts with a free 30-minute initial consultation. There's no obligation attached to it at all – it's simply a relaxed chance for us to meet, for you to ask anything you're wondering about, and for both of us to get a sense of whether this feels like the right fit, before you commit to anything further.

Sessions are £50 for 60 minutes, with some concessions available depending on circumstances – please do ask if cost is a worry, as it's something we can talk about. I offer both short-term and longer-term work, and there's no set structure I'll impose on you; we'll agree together on what feels right, reviewing how things are going as we go rather than deciding everything upfront.

I generally work Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and some weekends, between 9am and 7pm, by appointment only.

My first session

Your first session is a free, no-obligation 30-minute consultation – and if this is your first time speaking to a counsellor, please know that it's completely normal to feel a little nervous or unsure about what to expect. Most people do.

You don't need to prepare anything or know exactly what to say. It's simply a relaxed conversation – a chance for you to share, in whatever way feels comfortable, whatever has brought you to think about counselling, and for you to ask me anything at all about how I work. We'll also cover the practical side gently – confidentiality, fees, how sessions run – so you have a clear picture before we go any further, but there's no pressure to decide anything on the spot.

More than anything, this first conversation is about seeing whether it feels right to keep talking. That matters far more than anything you'll read on a page like this – and there's genuinely no obligation to continue afterwards if it doesn't feel like the right fit. Whatever you decide, reaching out is often the hardest part, and you've already done that.
