About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I’m John.

I work with people who are thoughtful and self-aware, yet find themselves stuck in recurring and unhelpful patterns that they don’t fully understand. This can be in relationships, their emotional life, or in their behaviour

My approach is suited to those who are looking for more than short-term solutions. Therapy with me is a space to explore your experience in depth, within a consistent and supportive therapeutic relationship.

Over time, we begin to understand the underlying patterns shaping your thoughts, feelings, and relationships—allowing for change that feels more grounded and lasting.

Practice description

Therapy

I offer weekly 50-minute online sessions, usually at the same time each week. Regular sessions help create a sense of continuity and stability, which can support the therapeutic process. Where needed, longer or more frequent sessions can also be arranged.

Therapy with me is typically open-ended. We continue working together for as long as it feels helpful and supportive, and you are free to end at a point that feels right for you.

My approach is warm, active, and engaged - I’m not a therapist who sits silently and nod! I will share my observations, reflections, and questions with honesty and care, and at times offer challenge where it may be helpful.

I have over 20 years’ experience working across therapy and social care, supporting people with a range of difficulties including trauma, anxiety, addiction, depression, relationship challenges, and work-related stress. Often these experiences are interconnected, and our work can help explore how different areas of your life influence one another.

I am an integrative therapist, drawing on a range of approaches to support the work we do. This allows me to adapt how I work to suit your individual needs, something we can reflect on and shape together as our work develops.

The Inner Compass Programme

My experience is that some people want further personal insight yet feel that ongoing therapy is not always for them.

I therefore offer a one-to-one programme for people who want to understand themselves more deeply, but aren’t necessarily looking for ongoing weekly therapy. The structured programme combines useful information with personal exploration.

Over 12 weeks, we meet for six 90-minute sessions, spaced every two weeks. The structure gives you time between sessions to reflect, notice patterns, and understand what emerges.

My first session

I usually encourage a brief exploratory call before arranging a first session. This gives us a chance to talk about what you’re looking for, ask any questions you may have, and see whether working together feels like a good fit.

If we decide to go ahead, the first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know each other. You can share as much or as little as feels comfortable, and we’ll start to explore what has brought you to therapy.

The first few sessions are often about building a trusting relationship and gaining a clearer understanding of the difficulties you’re experiencing. From there, we can begin to think together about what you would like to get from therapy and agree on a way forward that feels right for you.

About me and my therapy practice

In supervision my priority is to offer a confidential, supportive, and encouraging space where you can slow things down, think about your client work, and reflect honestly on your practice.

Practice description

My own therapy practice is Integrative, drawing on a range of approaches including Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis, Existential, Gestalt, CBT, and ACT. I also use Personal Consultancy, which allows space for coaching-style work to be integrated into therapy where this feels appropriate and helpful.

Before training as a therapist, my professional background was in social care, where I spent many years supervising staff. This gave me a strong grounding in safeguarding, working with risk, and supporting professionals who hold a great deal of responsibility. That experience continues to inform my supervision practice today, particularly when working with complex cases and ethical considerations.

In addition to that experience I have BPS approved Certificate in Advanced Supervision Skills in Clinical Supervision.

My therapy supervision work is largely informed by Proctor’s model, which emphasises learning, support, and accountability as the foundation of supervision. In practice I adapt my approach to suit your experience, your way of working, and what you need most at different points in your professional journey.

Above all, I aim to create a collaborative, reflective relationship that feels safe and meaningful.

I offer a free consultation call via zoom. This is a chance for us to get to know each other before starting work.
