About me and my therapy practice

I work integratively, drawing on person-centred, humanistic, psychodynamic, and CBT approaches. Rather than fitting clients into a single model, I adapt my approach depending on what is needed, whether that involves a more structured, practical focus on specific difficulties, or a more open, client-led exploration of what is on your mind.

In sessions, I tend to be direct but reflective. I will gently challenge unhelpful thoughts and patterns where this is useful, while creating a space in which clients feel able to explore their thoughts and feelings honestly. My aim is to help you understand what is going on for you, and to develop ways of managing difficult thoughts and feelings at a pace that suits you.

I do not believe therapy needs to be serious throughout. Many people use humour, including dark humour, as a way of coping, and I am comfortable engaging with this when it feels appropriate to the client. That said, I am equally attentive to when a conversation calls for a more serious or reflective tone, and I follow the client's lead in this regard.

I offer online sessions and work flexibly with clients on a short-term, long-term, or open-ended basis, depending on individual circumstances and goals.

Practice description

I work with a broad range of issues, so wherever a client is at, there is a good chance we can find something useful to work on together. This includes bereavement and loss, relationship and interpersonal difficulties, and past childhood experiences that continue to affect life in the present, even where that connection is not immediately obvious. I work with young people aged 12 and over, as well as adults, and see clients across a range of life stages.

When a client first gets in touch, I aim to respond within a week by email. I know that reaching out can feel like a significant step, so I try to respond as promptly as I can. From there, we will arrange a free, informal 20 minute consultation call. This is a relaxed conversation rather than anything formal. I will explain a little about how I work, the client is welcome to ask any questions they may have, and it gives them an opportunity to judge whether I am the right fit. There is no obligation to book a first session afterwards, and I would always encourage clients to trust their own judgement on this. If any questions remain after the call, clients are welcome to follow up by email and I will respond as soon as I can.

For clients under 18, parental or guardian consent is required before we begin working together, and I will explain what this involves during the initial consultation.

Sessions are 50 minutes long. Frequency is flexible and can be arranged around the client's schedule, though I would generally recommend fortnightly sessions as a minimum, in order to maintain momentum and get the most benefit from the work.

My first session

The first session is priced the same as all subsequent sessions, at £55. Before we begin, clients are asked to read through and sign a contract, which covers matters such as confidentiality, cancellations, and what to expect from working together. This needs to be completed before the first session.

I do not use any formal assessment forms at the outset, though I may introduce a few during the course of our work together if this helps to build a clearer picture of a client's needs. I also encourage clients to keep their own notes between sessions if they find this helpful, and to share these with me. This allows us to focus on what is actually important to the client.

The first session itself is primarily an opportunity to get to know the client. I will spend time gathering background and history, and building a sense of who the client is, as well as what has brought them to therapy. I consider this an important part of the process, as understanding the client as a person, rather than simply the problem they are facing, allows me to provide more effective support.
