Currently I am not able to take on new clients.
Although I do offer some sessions online, my experience is that working in person can be more effective.
About me and my therapy practice
My name's Sal, and I'm an integrative therapist.
An integrative approach in therapy means we might work differently depending on what you bring to therapy and what's most helpful. I draw from a person-centred, psychodynamic, and trauma-informed nervous system approaches, and take the view that we are not only individuals, but also part of systems (family, society, culture, ecosystem) that affect our lives and how we feel about ourselves.
A person-centred approach offers authentic connection and a safe, supportive working alliance.
Psychodynamic perspectives consider the influence of your early relationships and experiences, sometimes manifesting in how we relate to others in the present, and influencing how you see the world now.
Trauma-informed thinking takes into account unprocessed distress held in the body and nervous system, helping you expand your 'window of tolerance', managing both anxiety and panic (fear) and depressive collapse (despair) in the face of difficulty.
As a queer person with a long history in the LGBTQI community, I have personal experience of how society/culture can affect how we feel. Sometimes this is relevant for clients, sometimes not. You may be seeking therapy to explore issues related to your sexuality, gender or relationships, but equally, you may just be looking for a therapist who understands and affirms these fundamental aspects of your life while you explore other themes. I offer an inclusive, non-pathologising space that also acknowledges how power, privilege and social pressures can influence our wellbeing as much as what's going on within.
I also include a more soulful, transpersonal view, recognising that we are more than just what's happened to us. Our wounds not just damage, but can also be opportunities for growth, wisdom and meaning. As Jung says, ‘everything belongs’. A soulful view looks for meaning in our experiences, acknowleging what hurts, while remaining open to the ways these experiences can be necessary to help us grow.
Practice description
Therapy is a space for you to explore what's really happening and how you really feel, in a safe, accepting space free from judgement.
This is your process of healing, growth and transformation. I'll be by your side while you explore what's troubling you at your own pace, offering you support and encouragement as well as gentle challenge. I'll listen deeply to what you share, reflecting back what I hear and offering perspectives to shed more light on what's going on for you, helping you to change old, unhelpful patterns and tell a different story. We might consider any symptoms you bring – anxiety, depression, anger or other disturbing feelings or thoughts - not just as problems, but also messages from beyond our rational, conscious understanding.
As well as traditional talk therapy, we might listen to other ways of knowing that we're not consciously aware of. Our bodies, intuition and imagination have wisdom we can access by working somatically, exploring sensations in the body, taking our gut feelings seriously, or using images to express what's within us in other ways.
My first session
Reaching out to a therapist or counsellor is an act of profound self-care. It takes courage and isn't always easy, but can lead to relief from suffering or even liberating change.
I offer a free initial 20-minute online session or phone call for us to get a sense of each other before we agree to work together. This is a chance to talk about what brings you to therapy and ask me any questions you might have.
Therapy is a collaborative healing relationship, and the relationship has to feel right for the therapy to work well. Usually after a brief meeting, we'll know if we're a good match.
If we decide to work together, our sessions would be 50 minutes long and usually be scheduled weekly at the same time and place. Our work together could be short or long-term depending on what you need.
