About me and my therapy practice

Something isn't right. You might not be able to put your finger on exactly what - but there's a weight you're carrying. From the outside, things might look fine. But inside, you're struggling, and it's exhausting.

Maybe it shows up as anxiety that seems out of proportion to what's actually happening. Or a low mood that just won't lift. Perhaps you're grieving something - a person, a relationship, a version of your life you thought you'd have. Or events from the past keep finding their way into the present, in ways that feel confusing, painful or even overwhelming.

Or maybe it's less easy to name than that. You just feel lost - adrift from who you used to be, or from who you want to be. Unsure how to live in a way that feels genuinely yours. This can be true of anyone, and it's especially common for people navigating questions of identity, sexuality or gender.

Whatever is going on for you, you don't have to carry it alone.

I'm Jo - an accredited psychotherapist with practices in London, and Tunbridge Wells in Kent. I'm also available online. I've been through some genuinely hard periods in my own life - things I couldn't imagine surviving at the time. Therapy helped me. Now I work to help others find their way through.

Practice description

My approach is integrative - which means I draw on several different therapeutic traditions (including person-centred, psychodynamic, narrative and relational approaches) and adapt the work to suit you, rather than fitting you into a fixed method. You're not a case study. What we do together will be shaped around you and what you need.

I deliberately keep my client list relatively small. I want every person with whom I work to feel that they have my full attention and care - not a stretched or distracted version of it.

At the heart of my work is a belief that the answers you're looking for - the resilience, the clarity, the sense of who you are - are already inside you. We live in a world that can bend us out of shape: telling us who to be, what to want, how to feel. Part of the work of therapy is finding your way back to yourself. That process isn't always comfortable, but it is genuinely transformative.

I am a LGBTQ+ affirming therapist with specialist training in gender, sexuality and relationship diversity. I work with adults of all backgrounds and identities.

My first session

The first step is a free initial conversation of around 20 - 30 minutes - usually by video (Zoom), or phone if you prefer. No charge, no obligation. You can tell me a little about what's been going on. I'll tell you more about how I work and answer any of your questions. We'll both get a sense of whether working together feels right.

If we decide to go ahead, our first full session will likely be a blend of two things: some background (the important people, experiences and events that have shaped you and brought you to this point), and the immediate - what's happening for you right now and what you most want to address.

From there, I'm largely led by what you want to bring each week. But I'll also keep in mind some of the bigger themes and questions that are coming up; the patterns that may be causing pain. We'll work on them together. I'll help you to create a mental structure to make sense of what's been happening and together we'll work on creating a way to go forward in life that feels healing and happier.

As the saying goes, we need to live with the past, not in it.

You'll find me engaged and present. I'll offer you a space to bring whatever you need to bring, however difficult, hazy or confusing it feels. I listen carefully, but I'm not the kind of therapist who simply sits back in silence - I'll bring my own thoughts, instincts and perspectives into the room when it feels useful, always guided by what's right for you.

I'd love to hear from you. Please do get in touch for a free initial chat - it's the simplest first step.
