About me and my therapy practice

Perhaps you've become very good at coping. You might be the person who thinks things through, looks after other people and keeps going when things are difficult. But perhaps that isn't working as well as it used to. You may feel anxious, exhausted, angry, stuck in difficult relationships, or simply no longer sure what you need.

Sometimes we can understand ourselves very well and still find ourselves doing the same things. Therapy can offer something beyond another explanation: a place to explore what is happening with another person, and discover what might become possible from there.

I'm an integrative relational counsellor. Before training as a therapist, I worked for ten years in mental health services, supporting people through a wide range of difficulties and stages of life. I particularly enjoy working with women and with adults navigating change or difficulty. I often work with relationships, anxiety, people-pleasing, shame, self-criticism, anger, ADHD, trauma, burnout and menopause.

My work is relational, so I'm interested in what happens between us as well as in your relationships outside therapy. I want you to be able to say the things you might normally edit, soften or keep to yourself. We can become curious about the ways you've learned to protect yourself, belong and cope, and whether those ways are still helping you.

I also have a particular interest in working with people whose experiences of religion or spirituality have been difficult or traumatic. I'm an earth-based Pagan myself, and understand that spirituality can be a source of meaning and belonging, but can also become complicated by fear, shame, control or rejection. You don't need to share my beliefs for us to work together.

Finding the right therapist matters. If you're considering counselling, you're welcome to get in touch and see how it feels to talk with me.

Practice description

Therapy with me is a process of making sense of what is happening, together. We might start with something that feels immediate 鈥 anxiety, anger, a difficult relationship, exhaustion or a sense that you aren't quite yourself 鈥 and gradually become curious about what sits underneath it.

Sometimes we discover that the ways you've learned to cope have made a lot of sense in the context of your life, but aren't working as well for you now. We can look at what happens when you put other people's needs before your own, when you become hard on yourself, when you hold difficult feelings in, or when you find yourself reacting in ways you don't fully understand.

Because I work relationally, I'm interested not only in what you tell me about your relationships, but also in what happens between us. You may notice, for example, that you find it difficult to disagree with me, that you want to give me the 鈥渞ight鈥 answer, or that there are things you find yourself editing before you say them. These moments can become useful opportunities to understand yourself differently.

I work integratively, so I draw from different therapeutic approaches depending on what seems useful rather than expecting you to fit a particular model. There may be times when we focus on understanding the past, times when we pay attention to what is happening in the present, and times when we think about what you want to do differently.

I don't see therapy as simply finding the right explanation for why you are the way you are. Understanding matters, but so does having the opportunity to experience yourself differently. My hope is that, over time, you can develop a greater sense of choice about how you respond to yourself, other people and the circumstances of your life.

I offer therapy in person (Sheffield) and online (whole of UK).

My first session

Getting in touch with a therapist can feel like a big step, particularly if you're not used to talking about yourself or aren't quite sure what you need.

The first session is a chance for us to talk about what has brought you to counselling and for you to get a sense of what it is like to talk with me. You don't need to prepare anything or arrive with a clear explanation of what is wrong. We can start wherever feels most useful.

I'll be interested in what has been happening for you, what has prompted you to seek therapy now, and whether there are things you'd like to understand or change. I'll also answer any questions you have about how I work and give you space to ask anything you're unsure about.

Finding the right therapist matters, so the first session is also an opportunity for you to decide whether I feel like the right person for you. I encourage you to notice how it feels to talk with me 鈥 including whether you feel able to be yourself and say what you really mean. There is no pressure to decide immediately that you want to continue.

If we decide to work together, we'll agree how we'd like to approach the therapy and what might be helpful for you.
