About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m an integrative counsellor working online with adults. I run my own private practice and alongside this I also teach counselling students, supporting the next generation of therapists as they develop their skills and professional identity. My background is in psychology, which continues to influence and inform the way I understand people, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.

People often come to counselling at a point in life where something feels difficult, confusing, or overwhelming. Sometimes there is a clear reason for this, such as a loss, a relationship difficulty, anxiety, or a period of change. At other times people simply have a sense that something isn’t quite right, or that patterns in their life keep repeating in ways that are painful or frustrating.

Whatever brings you to therapy, my aim is to offer a safe, thoughtful, and non-judgemental space where you can begin to explore your experiences and make sense of what is happening for you.

Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Many people feel uncertain about where to begin or whether therapy is right for them. My approach is to meet you where you are, working at a pace that feels comfortable, and creating a space where you can speak openly without fear of being judged or rushed.

Practice description

I describe my approach as integrative, which means I draw on different therapeutic approaches rather than working from one single model. Over time I have come to believe that people are far too complex to fit neatly into one theoretical framework. An integrative approach allows me to adapt my work to the person sitting in front of me, rather than expecting them to adapt to a particular model of therapy.

At the heart of my work is the therapeutic relationship. Research consistently shows that the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. For this reason I focus on creating a relationship that is genuine, collaborative, and respectful.

This means you will find me to be present, engaged, and interested in understanding your world from your perspective. I won’t position myself as an expert on your life. Instead, we work together to explore your experiences, thoughts, emotions, and patterns in a way that helps bring greater clarity and understanding.

Depending on what feels helpful, our work might include:

Exploring past experiences and how they may still be influencing you

Understanding emotional patterns or recurring difficulties in relationships

Developing greater awareness of thoughts and feelings

Finding new ways of responding to challenges in your life

Creating space to reflect, process, and make sense of things

Sometimes therapy is about change, and sometimes it is about understanding and acceptance. Often it is a combination of both.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another in a relaxed and supportive space. I see it as the beginning of a conversation rather than something formal or intimidating. Starting counselling can sometimes feel like a big step, so my aim is to create a space where you feel comfortable sharing whatever feels important for you.

During this session we can talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you might be hoping for from the process. You may have a clear idea of what you would like to explore, or you may simply have a sense that something in life feels difficult or confusing. Both are completely valid starting points, and there is no pressure to have everything figured out.

I will also explain a little about how I work, including practical aspects such as confidentiality and how sessions usually run. This helps ensure that you feel informed and at ease about the counselling process.

Just as importantly, the first session gives you the chance to get a sense of whether working with me feels right for you. Counselling works best when you feel safe, respected, and listened to, so you are always welcome to ask questions or share any thoughts you may have.

My approach is grounded in person-centred values, meaning I work with warmth, empathy, and respect for your autonomy. Together we can think about what you would like from counselling going forward, always at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
