About me and my therapy practice

Hello!  I'm Samantha. Scrolling can leave you wondering- how do I choose the right counsellor though? It's not easy to get a sense of the real person behind words on a page. So I'm hoping that what I've  written below will help you work out if I sound like someone you could connect with- could see yourself talking to. This is usually a good starting point for choosing a counsellor to work with. So here鈥檚 a little about me, how I work, and what I might be able to help you with. If this resonates with you, feel free to get in touch.

I'm an experienced therapist in private practice, based in Newton Abbot, offering face-to-face and online therapy to clients aged 18+. Some of the issues I can help with include:

 anxiety, feeling on edge;

trauma, difficult childhood experiences

low self-esteem, self-criticism

 stress, feeling burnt out

low mood, loss of motivation, feeling 'not good enough'

life changes, bereavement, relationship difficulties

My approach is person-centred, rooted in empathy, curiosity and respect for what you've been through. I work in a way that's professional but human, gentle but honest- it's collaborative and founded on the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship. I'll meet you with openness, honesty and without judgement- work to  see and hear you, so that you feel understood and supported. Counselling could help to you to heal what鈥檚 been painful, and develop the awareness, skills and confidence to reach for the life you want to live.

I'm fully qualified, insured and registered with both NCPS and the 糖心官网. I have regular supervision and enjoy ongoing opportunities to develop my skills and knowledge through professional development and training.

Alongside my counselling work with clients, I'm also an associate and course assessor for The Devon Counselling College, bringing my knowledge and experience to helping to train the next generation of counsellors.

Practice description

If life has started to feel more like getting through the day than really living it, therapy can offer the space to slow things down and make sense of what鈥檚 happening beneath the surface.

People often come to counselling carrying far more than others realise. You may be used to holding things together, overthinking everything, putting your own needs last, or feeling stuck in patterns that leave you anxious, emotionally drained or disconnected from yourself. Sometimes these patterns are linked to past experiences or relationships. Sometimes they develop gradually over years of stress, pressure or self-criticism.

My approach is integrative, meaning I draw from different therapeutic approaches depending on what feels most helpful for you as an individual. Alongside person-centred counselling, I work in trauma-informed ways and may incorporate elements of CBT, Gestalt and Internal Family Systems where appropriate. Rather than focusing on 鈥渇ixing鈥 you, therapy becomes a space to better understand yourself, your emotional responses, your relationships and the experiences that have shaped you.

I work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and welcome diversity in all its forms, including neurodivergent clients such as ADHD and autistic adults. I aim to create a space that feels grounded, thoughtful and real 鈥 somewhere you can speak openly without feeling pressured to present yourself in a certain way.

I offer both short and longer-term counselling depending on your needs, with face-to-face sessions in Newton Abbot and online sessions across the UK. I also offer a free initial call if you鈥檇 like to ask questions or get a sense of whether working together feels right for you. There's no obligation or pressure to book anything at this point. It's just a chance to see if I'm someone you feel you could work with, and for me to find out a little more about you. Feel free to get in touch.

My first session

When you get in touch, I鈥檒l arrange an initial, free 20-minute chat to explore what brings you to therapy and how I may be able to help.

At this stage, I鈥檒l take some brief details and complete an initial assessment form. This helps us establish what you鈥檙e hoping to achieve from therapy.

Once we agree to move forward, we鈥檒l schedule your first session and I鈥檒l confirm this by email or text.

I鈥檒l also send you some paperwork by email for you to look over. This gives you a chance to read it before we discuss it in your first session.

Sessions last 1 hour and take place in a safe, confidential setting.

What happens in the first session?

When you come for your first session, I鈥檒l begin by welcoming you and taking some time to get to know what鈥檚 brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve.

We鈥檒l go over how we鈥檒l work, including confidentiality, session length, and any practical details, so you know what to expect. This is a 2-way process though 鈥 you may have a certain way of working or have specific goals you want to work towards. This is the time that we can discuss these things.

The first session is often more about understanding your story and what you鈥檇 like from counselling, rather than going more deeply into an issue straight away.

I may ask some questions to help me get a clearer picture of your needs and how I can best support you. It鈥檚 also a chance for you to see how you feel about working with me and to ask any questions you might have. Together, we鈥檒l decide whether continuing feels right for you and, if so, arrange our next session or series of sessions.
