About me and my therapy practice
5 years ago I attended my first counselling session. I was struggling with social anxiety, racing thoughts, depressive lows and negative voices. When I told my counsellor I had voices in my head, I felt he might think I was crazy. At the time, I was still unaware just how much I could learn from those voices.
Over the years that followed I embarked on a pursuit of truth which led me to personal growth and spirituality. Through hours and hours of counselling, I deconstructed the person I thought I was and felt I was becoming. With the help of a supportive, non judgemental professional; I discovered that what was truly me had always been there, it had just been layered with social expectations, childhood pain, confusing relationships and a world that seems to promote everything but genuine wellbeing. I discovered what had been within me the whole time. In other words...Me.
I share this with you, not just because I like talking about myself, but because I think it tells you more about me than any diploma, degree or doctorate ever could. Whilst I learnt a lot in my professional training, I truly learnt and continue to learn through my own personal journey and with every client I have ever sat with. I share this with you, too, in hopes that it shows you exactly why I do this work. I recognise just how influential counselling was for me, and to offer this space to others is quite honestly an honour.
Practice description
Maybe you have a gut feeling that says something is wrong or needs to change. Maybe you feel there’s more to life than how you’re currently living or feeling. Maybe this feeling is intense, subtle, or fluctuates. My journey started with a similar feeling and I have since learned that we’re not crazy for having these thoughts and feelings, rather, they are powerful messages from within. I aim to create a space for you to observe, reflect and listen to these messages. I feel they have a lot to tell us. I also believe that when we ignore these messages, we risk forcing the body to speak up in much more dangerous ways.
A key part of my practice is recognising that this work can be scary. It’s therefore my job to help cultivate a space for you to feel safe, listened to, understood, accepted and free from judgement. Together, in this space, I invite you to look at some of your feelings and problems that you experience in your world. At your pace, I will support you to reflect on the person you have become and are becoming. I will remain continually curious about your world and be a continuing source of compassion, offering you space on your journey.
While I will support you in this space, I won’t do this work for you. I believe It’s my role to empower and support you in discovering your goals and resolutions but not to find them for you. I don’t diagnose, tell you how to solve your problems or attempt to rescue you from them.
I am sure you are aware of the saying that if you want to change the world, you should start with yourself. I hope to offer you a space to change the world, starting with you. This might sound a big leap from where you currently are. But I believe through our work you may come to have a greater understanding of who you are and what is meaningful to you. I feel that this greater self understanding is crucial for making positive changes in our lives.
My first session
If my approach feels like it might be right for you, I’m able to offer a free 30 minute consultation to answer any of your questions, discuss how I work and for you to decide if I’m the right counsellor for you. This consultation is financially free and commitment free. It’s truly about seeing if this is right for you and how you feel about working with me. Research has consistently proven that far greater than any theoretical approach is the relationship between client and counsellor. This consultation is an opportunity for you to find out how I work but also for you to get a feel for if we connect, get along and if you will feel comfortable working with me.
