About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified Child and Adolescent Therapist, trained in Play Therapy (BAPT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (NHS).
I have been working children, young people and their families for over 25 years.
Alongside my private practice, I am currently offering a therapy service within schools and I am working with a number of councils and third sector organisations.
I have had extensive experience working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health services, schools and in the community.
My experience has shown me that a child’s emotional well-being and mental health underpins their ability to learn and develop satisfying relationships, to grow into healthy adults.
Child and Adolescent Therapists are trained to respond to the way that the child or young person wishes to communicate. It’s often difficult for younger children to find the words to express their feelings, so we provide toys and art materials which they can use to show us what they are thinking and feeling.
In my work with children and young people I am non-directive, following the child’s preferences and lead. In this way I can begin to help children to voice their worries and develop new ways and skills to overcome their difficulties.
Whilst adolescents may prefer to talk about their feelings, they might also choose to use art materials through which to communicate.
I use strength-based approaches and have experience working with children who are non-divergent and non-verbal communication. I can offer help to children experiencing anxiety, low mood, attachment difficulties, challenges at school, special educational needs, grief, trauma, behavioural and relational difficulties.
My first session
Following our initial contact by phone or email, we will arrange a time to meet to explore your concerns further and for me to gather necessary background information.
It maybe that I ask you to complete some questionnaires to help me better understand your or your child's needs.
Typically this is a 75 minute appointment.
We can meet in person or via video call.
This appointment is for parents only.
We will then think together about what is most helpful moving forwards. It maybe at this point we arrange a time to meet with your child or it could be that we arrange another time for us to meet together.
The first session for your child or young person is a gentle introduction to our therapy space, a playroom and for them to begin to understand why we are meeting and my role.
The playroom is designed to enable your child or young person to feel safe and comfortable to explore a wide range of resources- including creative materials and specially chosen toys.
Generally you may stay with them during this initial meeting
