About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Ceri. I am a qualified integrative counsellor working with adults, young people and children. I offer a warm, supportive and non-judgemental space where you can feel heard, understood and able to explore what is happening for you.
People come to counselling for many different reasons. You may be experiencing anxiety, stress, low mood, low self-esteem, relationship or family difficulties, burnout, loss or a challenging period of change. Sometimes there is a clear reason for seeking support, while at other times you may simply feel overwhelmed, stuck or unsure how to move forward.
Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years working in education, including 18 years in leadership and pastoral roles. This experience has given me a particular understanding of the pressures faced by children and young people, parents, education professionals and those in caring roles.
Alongside my private practice, I have experience providing counselling through voluntary counselling services, supporting clients with a wide range of emotional and relational difficulties. I also teach counselling skills, which has further developed my understanding of therapeutic practice and the importance of creating safe, respectful and meaningful therapeutic relationships.
I believe that having the opportunity to talk openly, without judgement, can be incredibly valuable. My role is not to tell you what to do, but to work alongside you with curiosity, empathy and compassion, helping you develop a greater understanding of yourself and find a way forward that feels right for you.
Practice description
My approach is integrative, which means I draw on different therapeutic perspectives and tailor the way I work to you as an individual. I believe that no two people experience difficulties in exactly the same way, so counselling should not be a one-size-fits-all process.
I work in a relational and person-centred way, placing the therapeutic relationship at the heart of our work together. I aim to create a space where you can feel safe enough to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Together, we might explore patterns in your thoughts, feelings and relationships, experiences that have shaped you, or difficulties that may be keeping you feeling stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected. We can also focus on what is happening for you in the present and consider what might help you feel more able to cope and move forward.
I have experience supporting people with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, bereavement, loss, self-harm, relationship and family difficulties, trauma, stress and challenging life transitions.
My previous experience in education means I have a particular understanding of the emotional demands of school life and the pressures that can come with parenting, caring and working in education. I welcome adults who may be struggling in these areas, as well as young people and children who need a space of their own.
Counselling can be short-term or longer-term, depending on your circumstances, needs and what we agree together. The focus will always be on what feels helpful and appropriate for you.
My first session
Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting, particularly if you are not used to talking about how you feel or you are unsure whether counselling is right for you.
Our first session gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you would like support with. You do not need to have everything worked out beforehand, and there is no expectation that you will know exactly what to say.
We can take some time to get to know one another, discuss what you hope to gain from counselling and consider how we might work together. It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of whether you feel comfortable with my approach.
I believe that feeling safe, heard and comfortable with your counsellor is an important part of therapy. If I feel that another service or professional would be better placed to support you, I will discuss this with you and help you consider appropriate alternatives.
