Practice description

Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) is based on how we form relationships and how we can develop these further so that we can enjoy the present time by reflecting on and learning ways to do things more effectively rather than being stuck in old habits that no longer serve us well. I treat everyone who I meet as having had uniquely different life experiences. I can assess and make recommendations in order to create for you a bespoke treatment plan. We can, if you so choose, evaluate this for clinical effectiveness.

I specialise in expert treatment for people in high pressure and stressful jobs or in retirement planning. I have a unique understanding of the associated issues from my first career in the music industry . I can provide you with new, creative and helpful ways to understand ytourself better.I will spend time outside of your session to reflect on and build up a personal reformulation Ietter for you which is a useful aide memoire to support relapse prevention once your weekly sessions are completed.

I provide face to face and remote access sessions in both London at Guy’s hospital and in Cumbria and Lancashire. CAT is very effective for those suffering with anxiety, depression and trauma -related issues. My life and work experiences provide a unique understanding by which to help people who are suffering from trauma -related issues, for people working in media, sports and the performing arts. Equally I help people who feel they have lost their way, others who are struggling with relationship issues, many who are going through a life transition and those who may be suffering bereavement, anxiety or depression. I have a total of thirty years of therapeutic experience both in the National Health Service and private practice. I promote balanced, holistic and active healthy lifestyle choices.

I am a Cognitive Analytic Therapist and supervisor, The latter involves a six month apprenticeship which I undertook whilst implementing NHS research. between 2010-2012. I have completed level 4 child and adult safeguarding training.

CAT is an integrative, pragmatic and versatile model that is underpinned by relational concepts and a good evidence base. I follow a trauma-informed approach in exploring and formulating objectively and in collaboration with my supervisees the clinical issues brought to their sessions. I support my supervises with openness towards developing their clinical practice, guiding them in their chosen direction and  with their aspirations. I encourage creativity and innovation.

I am UKCP and ÌÇÐĹÙÍø registered with the Professional standards authority accredited register. I am also an HCPC registered Music therapist, researcher and approved supervisor.

The use of the title Dr in this directory listing relates to the member’s doctorate qualification. However, this does not imply a general medical qualification.

Practice description

I provide individual and group supervision both face to face and online. I am also trained in CAT speed supervision to work remotely and securely via the Internet, thereby seeing supervises living abroad. For therapists working in multi-disciplinary NHS and private treatment as well as those in other countries, I can also help you with contextual reformulation of the organisational dynamics that can sometimes be challenging and perplexing.

Your supervision may incorporate trauma-informed and poly vagal mapping techniques, embodied practises, psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, cognitive behavioural and acceptance and commitment concepts of mindfulness depending on the needs and orientation of you the supervisee and your client(s).

More information: I  worked as Head of Arts Therapies and Clinical Research Lead in Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust forensic psychiatric services for 15 years. I  developed and researched the evidence base for CAT as a theoretical and pragmatic foundation for time-limited and longer-term music therapy, for which subsequently I  was awarded the 2016 Ruskin Medal for the most impactful doctoral research. I am the  author of two books and numerous chapters. Most recently I am incorporating nature based and equine assisted therapy in to my practice in cumbria.
